Pure and Holy Passion
August 31, 2003
Barbara
I have been touched by a song from the Passion One Day album. It goes like this:
Give me one pure and holy passion,
And give me one magnificent obsession,
Give me one glorious ambition for my life–
To know and to follow hard after You.
To know and to follow hard after You,
To grow as Your disciple in Your truth.
This world is empty, pale and poor,
compared to knowing You my Lord,
Lead me on, and I will run after You,
Lead me on, and I will run after You.
Every time I hear this, I want to hit my knees. I say yes, yes, Lord! Give me one magnificent obsession, one glorious ambition–to know and follow hard after You.

Should this be our obsession, to know God and follow hard after Him? I think our obsession should be with Christ’s perfect work in life and on the Cross, that we are no longer defined by our sin, but marked by His righteousness which has been imputed to us through faith alone, by grace alone, attained by the work of Christ alone. After all, how else could we even begin to Know God without that work of Christ? Would we ever even desire in the smallest ammount to follow after God unless His Spirit has come into our hearts and changed them, the answer is no, and because Christ is our great high priest, we may now approach God, and even God may live within us, and we will are not consummed.
I agree that we should “follow hard” after God, but we should only do this in response to the greatness of the Gospel; out of a deep grattitude. Any other motivation, wether intrinsic or extrinsic will lead to despair. The scriptures teach that we do not naturally run after God, but rather we run away from Him in shame and fear of His wrath. We do not suddently run after God because He leads us, whatever that means, but because we now have confidence and boldness through the work of Christ to have deep, intimate fellowship with God. When God the Father looks at us now, He can’t help but be pleased, because He see’s the perfect obedience of His Son. This is the Gospel, and this should be our one and only passion.

Hi Barb. I love your slogan, “Intentionally determined to be more like Jesus!”
You have encouraged me just with your slogan. I can imagine how encouraged people are who spend time under your mentorship!
Stay blessed, empowered to prosper in God & in Life!

I have been trying to find a good version of this song. What is your favorite one and how do I find it????
I used to have a tape cassette of it by a group called Passion for His Presence, however they haven’t been around for years and their work is no longer available.
I trust you have been enjoying a wonderfully performed version of this song, and would like one myself. He’s all I live for. He saved me from Ovarian Cancer – a 7 lb. tumor on my ovaries! I turned the chemo room into a beautiful ministry, not once thinking about my pain. He is just soooo amazing!
